Growing and Maintaining Edible Landscaping

Traditionally, lawns are status symbols for many Europeans. Large, green lawns mean that the estate has many sheep and lots of cattle. Americans, too, have been obsessed by lawns since the 1950s. But because of the eco-revolution many have taken time tore-think of our lawns. Lawns use a lot of staggering energy to maintain. They use up a lot of water, they take up valuable real estate, and the pesticide and the petrochemicals used to fertilize the lawn seethe into and contaminate our water. Even the power tools for maintenance contribute to both air and noise pollution. Instead we can transform these green lawns into green landscape.

Some of the things we can do is to decrease the size of the lawn or like many have done is to eliminate it entirely. Planting pretty flowers do not only beautify the land, but also add value to your home. However, there are edible plants that do not just produce pretty flowers, but also delicious produce. Beautiful flowers can beautify both the exterior and interior of your home. Delicious produce can fill the table with sumptuous dishes.

Planting and maintaining an edible landscaping has its ups and downs. True, it is not just something we do for the fun of it, but also serves as well especially when we harvest the fruits of our labor. For many good reasons, having an edible landscape in our own backyard is something worthwhile.

Having an edible landscape is very easy and cheap. Not only does it provide us with homegrown produce, it also protects us from buying produce that have been tainted with so many chemicals that can harm us and our loved ones.

You can create a small orchard by starting with dwarf or semi dwarf apple trees. You can have beautiful flowers in spring, a good shade in summer and juicy apples to eat in the fall. To maintain the goodness in the soil, put a two inch thick layer of mulch around your orchard. This is to make sure that moisture is kept in and weeds out.

You can also plant vegetable in pots like eggplants or cherry tomatoes in your edible landscape. They will look fabulous once they start growing. If you have a wide area for growing pumpkins, go for it. Remember to place a low fence around it to keep rabbits and other creature from raiding your plot at night. A small scare crow can work to some extent with these varmints.

Maintaining your edible landscape is not that at all hard. You do not have to spend so much water to keep it well watered. What you can do is to collect rain water in a big tank and connect your water hose to it so you can water your edible landscape with it.

Use natural fertilizer instead of harmful chemical ones. Compost fertilizer is way much cheaper and works better than expensive chemicals bought at stores. They are safe both to humans and animals.
